World Water Day this weekend to be biggest in five years (Singapore)

SINGAPORE — The upcoming World Water Day in two days’ time is expected to reach out to more than 200,000 people across more than 250 locations — the biggest outreach effort in five years, national water agency PUB said today (March 13).
The event comes as Singapore grapples with a dry spell and calls have been made to encourage both households and non-domestic users to conserve water.
The theme for this year’s World Water Day here will be conservation with five key sites — Marina Barrage, Jurong Lake, Geylang River, Punggol Waterway and Yishun Pond — hosting various activities on Saturday to spread the message.
In the lead up, other partners have also organised various activities to commemorate World Water Day.
A water conservation contest was held at the Haig Road Market and Food Centre yesterday, with stallholders submitting their utility bills to see who saved the most water.
The participants recorded a total savings of about 17,000 litres of water, including the 6,500 litres saved over two months by the contest winner alone.
Separately, PUB Chief Executive Chew Men Leong said water demand in recent weeks remained between 415-420 million gallons a day (mgd), higher than the usual level of about 400 mgd.
He added that while Singapore has reached such levels of water consumption previously, they were not maintained over such a sustained period of time. He also urged individuals, households and the non-domestic sector to take immediate steps to conserve water.
Let’s not wait for the rain to come and start saving water now, he added.
